MAKING FONTS WHILE CHECKING YOUR EMAIL

fontstruct

While traditional type-designers have been using programs such as FontLab or Fontographer (goes way back to 1985) to design their typefaces over recent years, FontShop has released a clever web-based font building tool geared towards the non-classical/casual type-designer called FontStruct (devised and developed for FontShop FSI by Rob Meek) .

FontStruct lets you quickly and easily create fonts constructed out of geometrical shapes, which are arranged in a grid pattern, like tiles or bricks. You create ‘FontStructions’ using the ‘FontStructor’ font editor. Once you’re done building, FontStruct generates high-quality TrueType fonts, ready to use in any Mac or Windows application. It’s worth taking a peek at their intro video.

A typeface called Opera is finally up for sale on the Gestalten website. Been a long time coming. Opera is a collaboration between RD Granados (Stereo Type Haus) & Ros Knopov (from Anti/Anti). The font was developed throughout 2003-2005.

“Gestalten is happy to release Opera through our font foundry. Characterised by its curvy counters, Opera is named after the font’s letter “O”, resembling the open mouth of an opera singer. The four weights can be used individually or together for a variety of applications including magazine body texts or a striking headline.”
